History of House
Bawtry House takes its name from the town of Bawtry in Yorkshire, England. From its origins as a military settlement on the Roman Road, Ermine Street, Bawtry has been at the forefront of history throughout the centuries. It was the location of a landmark Anglo Saxon battle in 616 A.D. in which the Saxon royal line was forever changed. It later became subject to Danelaw under the Vikings and two centuries later fell under Norman rule.

More than five-hundred years later, in 1620, citizens of Bawtry and its surrounding villages played a major role in shaping future world history. That year, over a dozen of Bawtry’s residents set sail on the Mayflower for the New World. Among them was William Bradford, who was elected Governor of Plymouth Colony and oversaw its courts, finances and government. One of Governor Bradford’s neighbors (George Morton) was from a village (Scrooby) nearby to Bawtry. When the Mayflower sailed, he remained in England to orchestrate business affairs in Europe and London for the Pilgrims’ cause. Within three years, however, George Morton had arrived in Plymouth.

Morton’s descendants found great prosperity in the New World and became prominent leaders in business and government. Marcus Morton was twice Governor of Massachusetts. Levi Morton was the 22nd Vice President of the United States and 31st Governor of New York. Joy Morton founded the Morton Salt Company. Paul Morton was the 34th Secretary of the Navy . . . and Henry Cotton Morton was the founder of Benton Harbor, Michigan and the builder of the Morton House Museum in Benton Harbor.
